An alert witness prevented his grandfather’s car from being stolen and helped catch one of the two suspects in the crime.

According to police, the witness saw two men with the ignition of his grandfather’s vehicle at about 7:35 a.m. at a Kalihi business. The two suspects attempted to flee after the witness confronted him, but the witness, his father and grandfather searched the area and were able to detain one of the suspects at a strip mall on Auiki Street  until police arrived.

The suspect, who gave no local address, is in custody for attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and two probation revocation warrants.

Police were still looking for the other suspect.
