2012 Maui Invitational field set
North Carolina, Texas and back-to-back NCAA runner-up Butler highlight the eight-team field in the 2012 Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center released yesterday.
Other college basketball teams joining host Chaminade in the field are Illinois, Marquette, Mississippi State and Southern California.
The Tar Heels have won the national title the last two times they appeared in Maui (2004, 2008). MSU is making its first appearance in the tournament.
The 2011 tournament features Duke, Kansas, Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA. Defending NCAA champion Connecticut won last year’s tournament.
Hawaii in eighth at Junior America’s Cup
Hawaii remained third, but fell eight shots off the pace set by Northern California on Wednesday in the second round of the Girls Junior America’s Cup.
The annual event, won by Hawaii last year, is being played at Genoa Lakes Golf Club and Resort, in Genoa, Nev. It ends today.
Northern California shared the first-round lead and broke away with a team score of 211 in the second round. Its two-day total is 431. Oregon (217—438), last year’s runner-up, is second followed by Hawaii (218—439).
Moanalua junior Eimi Koga, the reigning state high school champion, dropped out of a share of first after shooting a second-round 75. She is tied for sixth at 144, five shots back of individual leader Paige Lee. ‘Iolani senior Marissa Chow (72—146) has a share of 10th, Punahou junior Kacie Komoto (71—149) is tied for 20th and Punahou senior Margaret Min (75—156) is tied for 38th.

Seung Jae Maeng led Hawaii with a 73, followed by Kalena Preus and Richard Hattori at 75 and Alex Chiarella at 77.
Ho wins heat in Brazil
Michael Ho scored a 12.15 in the third heat of the SuperSurf ASP World Masters yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Competing in the Grand Masters division, Ho recorded the best score of his heat. Fellow Hawaii surfers Kaipo Jaquias (11.60; second place in Heat 2), Derek Ho (8.50; third place in Heat 3) and Marty Thomas (6.50; fourth place in Heat 6) competed in the World Masters division. The championships continue today, conditions permitting.
Milton wins Pearl
Pomi Milton fired a 4-under 68 in the final round to win the Boys 15-18 title of the Pearl Junior Open on Tuesday at Pearl Country Club. The tournament is one of the Oahu Junior Golf Association majors.
Milton’s two-day total of 143 was four shots better than Scotty Yamashita, who closed with a 70. Kaci Masuda (76—151) won the Girls 15-18 title by five shots over Lisa Kang.
Other boys winners were Koki Domeki (76—149) in the 13-14s, Shawn Lu (65—134) at 11-12 and Ryoya Aihara (69—140) in 10 and under. The rest of the girls winners were Yangcongrong (Rose) Huang (80—160) at 13-14, Sumire Noda (76—150) for 11-12 and Aneka Seumanutafa (80—156)‚ for 10-under.
