Death in Vegas casino burglary ruled a homicide

LAS VEGAS >> Las Vegas police are investigating the death of a Nevada man who died after struggling with a tourist over a stolen wallet at a Las Vegas Strip hotel.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell said Thursday that the police department is forwarding its investigation to the Clark County district attorney’s office to determine whether any charges should be filed in the attempted burglary turned fatal at the New York New York hotel and casino.

Police say the North Las Vegas man who died had met four male adult tourists and had returned with them to their hotel room July 6 to sleep.

The man was attempting to flee the hotel room with several wallets and other items just before 6 a.m. the next morning when one of the tourists woke up and confronted him.

The tourist chased the man out into the hallway, where they scuffled. The tourist ultimately pushed the man, who hit his head on an elevator door and passed out.

The tourist recovered the items, returned to his room and went to sleep.

Casino security officers found the unconscious man just before noon near the elevator. He was taken to a hospital, where he died July 9. Hospital officials initially thought the man suffered from a medical condition but then determined he had been injured.

Hospital officials notified police of the incident about 15 hours after the fight, Cassell said.

Cassell said police initially decided not to arrest anyone, but the Clark County coroner’s office ruled the death a homicide.

None of the men involved in the case was identified.

The death marks the fifth homicide on the Strip since June 25.
