Kam Drive-In family movies feature Hawaii pro surfers
Local professional surfers will be featured during a free family movie night at Kam Drive-In from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday
At 7 p.m., the Oxbow’s "Walls of Perception," shot in Hawaii, France, Tahiti, Australia and other locations, kicks off the fun. The film highlights local surfers, including standup paddling world champion Kai Lenny and current Association of Surfing Professionals world longboard champion Duane DeSoto.
At 8:15 p.m., "Soul Surfer" will screen. The movie is based on the story of local teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack.
Duane DeSoto, Kai Lenny and Matt Meola will sign autographs.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m.; $10 parking fee (a maximum of 8 people per car); $40 donation for priority parking. Proceeds benefit local families in need, the Kid’s Heart Project for Children and tsunami victims in Japan. Call 545-5683.
Dinosaurs retiring from museum exhibit
After a six-month run, Monday will be the last day to see the Bishop Museum exhibit "Dinosaurs Unearthed: Feathered Discoveries."
The display intersperses life-size, robotic dinosaurs with information on the recent connections made between birds and dinosaurs.
Up next is the traveling exhibit "Facing Mars," which opens Oct. 15.

Times campaign to help fund schools
The "Shop and Score" program hosted by Times Supermarkets and Kraft Foods provides an opportunity for local schools to receive new uniforms and athletic equipment valued at $250,000. After this year, the program will have donated nearly $1 million to assist high school athletics.
The program runs until Oct. 4. Consumers at Times Supermarkets and Big Save stores on Oahu, Kauai and Maui can earn points for both private and public schools by purchasing Kraft and other products labeled in the store.
Schools can earn an additional 100 points when shoppers open a free checking account at any American Savings Bank on Kauai, Oahu or Maui. American Savings Bank will also award $25,000 in scholarships to outstanding students.
Rice Festival brings live music, keiki fun
Don’t forget your chopsticks as you celebrate the rich heritage of rice Sept. 11 at the second annual Rice Festival at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rice will be the star of the day at this family-friendly festival. Learn everything there is to know about rice, from eating it and cooking it to its history.
Besides cooking demonstrations, there will be live music, lion dancers, a Spam musubi eating contest, "Riceipe" contest, keiki zone with Bubbles Duh Clown and Mobile Gamer Guys and a chance to meet Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, author of "The Hawai’i Book of Rice: Tales, Trivia and 101 Great Recipes."
Lanakila Meals on Wheels, which feeds needy seniors, will take donations of brown rice at the festival.

Duke’s holding ukulele contest
It’s time to get plucky again for the Sixth Annual Duke’s Uke Contest, which will hold audition sessions in mid-September and October, with the finals held in mid-October.
The contest, for solo nonprofessional musicians, is split into instrumental and instrumental-voice divisions. In the instrumental division, musicians will compete in four age categories; ages 6 to 10, 11 to 15; 16 to 18; and 19 and older. The instrumental-voice division is open to all ages. About five contestants in each category will be selected to perform in the finals.
Contestants will be judged on instrumental ability, stage presence/showmanship, intonation and clarity, rhythm/timing, and overall performance. There is no fee to audition. Prizes include a Kamaka ukulele, gift certificates and merchandise.
Open auditions will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 on the second floor of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel, 2335 Kalakaua Ave. Contest spokeswoman Malia Chung said that up to 30 contestants have auditioned per category in previous years. The finals will be held Oct. 15.
