Snorkeler dies after ocean rescue
A 32-year-old Wisconsin man died after Friday being pulled from waters off Haena Beach Park on Kauai.
According to the Kauai Fire Department, Army Cpl. Chester Stoda of Black River Falls, Wis., was scuba diving with a friend near Tunnels Beach.
Lifeguard John Cammak watched the pair as they dove and resurfaced, when Stoda’s partner returned to the beach. Stoda remained in the water to snorkel, Cammak told authorities.
Cammak said that before he closed his station at 5 p.m., he swam out to check on Stoda and found him unconscious about 50 yards offshore.
Cammak and fire department personnel administered CPR until an ambulance arrived shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Stoda was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled.
Stoda was an Army combat engineer assigned to the 937th Engineering Company, based in Fort Hood, Texas, according to his Facebook page.
Crash lands motorcyclist, 21, in hospital
A 21-year-old motorcyclist was in critical condition Saturday after his motorcycle crashed on the Windward-bound lanes of H-3 freeway in Kailua.
Police said a man was riding a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja about 12:07 p.m. when he lost control at a bend and crashed into the left shoulder about a quarter-mile east of the Mokapu Saddle Road offramp. Speeding appeared to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
The man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in stable condition after suffering a fractured skull, bruised ribs and cuts to his face, but was later downgraded to critical condition, police said. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
The crash shut down all lanes of H-3 Kailua-bound between the Kamehameha Highway and Mokapu Saddle Road offramps for several hours as officers investigated the scene.
