Surfing to the next water sport
The wave may continue beyond surfing, which was introduced as an official Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship sport on Monday.
Keith Amemiya, the Board of Education member and former HHSAA chief, noted during Monday’s press conference that other water sports, including bodyboarding, may become official high school championship sports.
“We want to make sure we get surfing right, first,” he said.
8-man football alive and kicking
The Maui Interscholastic League’s experiment in eight-man football is progressing as planned.
Molokai defeated St. Anthony 54-16 on Saturday in the latest exhibition game at the Trojans’ field. Molokai’s Kekoa DeMello scored four touchdowns in the game.
The MIL is hoping to field at least four teams in the near future, with the hope that other leagues will jump on the bandwagon with eight-man teams of their own. That would lead to a possible state tournament — maybe.
Warriors near milestone in Pukalani
Kamehameha-Maui is on a roll in the Maui Interscholastic League.
The Warriors, coached by Bala Spencer, have won 49 MIL girls volleyball matches in a row after Saturday’s sweep of the Baldwin Bears.
They can hit the 50-win mark tonight against Lahainaluna.
KS-Maui is 8-0 in league play this season.
