APEC surveillance cameras up for vote today in Honolulu

Star-Advertiser

The Honolulu City Council is set to decide on whether to install surveillance cameras across Oahu for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Council members are scheduled to vote on the issue during their meeting today.

About 30 cameras would be installed and officials say most would be removed after the November conference.

A committee backed the idea last month, sending it to the full council for a vote.

Councilman Nestor Garcia opposed the idea, saying he’s concerned about the chilling effect the cameras would have on protesters.
