Seasiders ranked No. 5; Chang recognized
The Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball team was ranked No. 5 in The Sporting News Division II poll and Seasiders senior guard Jet Chang was selected a preseason first-team All-American in the magazine’s college basketball issue.
BYUH fell to Bellarmine in last year’s national championship game.
Chang, who averaged 21.2 points and 3.6 rebounds, was also named as a candidate for the D-II Player of the Year. He was the Most Outstanding Player at the Elite Eight, averaging 33.3 points over three games, including 35 in the title contest.
CROSS COUNTRY
Weekly honor to BYUH’s Krout
BYU-Hawaii senior Lacey Krout was named the conference women’s cross country runner of the week, her second honor this season. Krout won the Hawaii Hilo Invitational last Saturday, finishing in 18 minutes, 21 seconds over the 5K course at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf and Country Club. The Seasiders finished second in the team standings, with BYUH’s Katherine Buxton taking second individually, 3 seconds behind Krout.
BYUH men win team title at UHH Invitational
BYU-Hawaii junior Spencer Deavila took medalist honors, finishing the 8K course in 20:51 and leading a Seasiders sweep of the top three spots as BYUH won the UHH Invitational team title on Saturday. Justin Royer was second in 21:10, and Daniel Bridge took third in 21:12.
SOCCER
HPU’s Wall earns weekly honor
Hawaii Pacific junior midfielder Kaua Wall was named player of the week in women’s soccer after scoring all four of the Sea Warriors’ goals against Chaminade last week. The Konawaena product scored in the 77th and 86th minutes to put the game out of reach.
Women’s honor roll
Britt Edman, BYUH: The senior forward played a part in both scores in a 2-1 win over Hawaii Hilo with an assist and the game-winning goal at 51:35.
Moani Hagiwara, UHH: The junior forward out of Waiakea scored the lone goal in the 2-1 loss to BYUH and added an assist in the 2-2 double-overtime draw with HPU.
Kim Micheletti, BYUH: The sophomore forward scored goals in both of the Seasiders’ wins last week, 2-1 over UHH and 3-1 over Chaminade.
Sanoe Souza, HPU: The junior out of Kamehameha had three assists as the Sea Warriors went 1-0-1, with two assists in the 2-2 draw with UHH and one in the 4-0 win over Chaminade.
Men’s honor roll
Chance Bukoski, HPU: The senior forward out of Kapaa had a goal and an assist in the 3-0 shutout of UHH and an assist in the 5-1 loss to Simon Fraser.
Kimo Komomua, HPU: The junior midfielder out of Kamehameha had a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win over the Vulcans.
Eric Lowe, BYUH: The senior forward scored the lone goal in the 4-1 loss to Simon Fraser and helped the Seasiders beat Chaminade 2-0 with a goal on a penalty kick and an assist.
VOLLEYBALL
Honor roll
Shih Ting Chen, BYUH: The freshman middle helped the Seasiders to a 3-0 week with a combined 52 kills and six block assists.
Ying Chun Chen, BYUH: The freshman setter had 126 assists for a conference-leading 11.45 assists average, for the Seasiders.
Lauren Hagemeyer, BYUH: The junior hitter had 38 kills and 12 block assists in three wins for the Seasiders.
Crystal Powell, CU: The sophomore hitter out of Word of Life had 19 kills and an ace in a 3-1 loss to HPU.
