Rice is nice at Blaisdell
Get a Taste of the Pacific and pay a visit to Rice Heaven at this weekend’s Food and New Products Show at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
Taste of the Pacific offers lots of samples and a mix of food booths, including India Cafe, Ocean Dim Sum, Hula Shrimp and New Violets Grill. There will also be wine tasting and health drinks.
The show will also feature Rice Heaven, a lineup of Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Indian and Filipino dishes cooked with rice, and the second annual Sooper Bowl saimin eating contest.
The show runs 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3, $1 military, and free for children. Go to pacificexpos.com/food-new-products.
Fend off Alzheimer’s with diet
Steve Blake will speak about a nutritional approach to curbing the risk and progression of Alzheimer’s disease at 7 p.m. Saturday at Ala Moana Park’s McCoy Pavilion.
Blake, a doctor of naturopathic medicine, will cover the benefits of increasing antioxidant fruits, vegetables and seeds and lowering saturated fats in the diet.

All about ‘pressure canning’
Laie resident Patricia Miller, known in the area for her canning expertise, will share tips for "pressure canning" food at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kahuku Public & School Library.
Miller cans and preserves fresh food as part of her sustainability effort. Her presentation will include samples.

Biotech discussion on tap
Kapolei Public Library hosts a two-part panel discussion series on "Agriculture & Biotechnology in Hawaii."
At 5:30 p.m. Oct. 19, panelists will cover "Non GMO Foods and Our Right to Choose." At 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2, they will discuss "Biotechnology: A Part of Hawaii’s Agricultural Community."
