UH’s Parnaby no-hits Chaminade in sweep
University of Hawaii pitcher Kaia Parnaby threw a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Parnaby struck out 15, walked none and allowed just one baserunner, on an error, in UH’s 13-0 win in the first game. The Wahine then hit six home runs in a 19-2 rout in the finale of the three-game series.
UH senior Stephanie Ricketts struck out six and allowed one hit over five innings to earn the win in the second game.
Shortstop Jessica Iwata went 4-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs in the doubleheader. Freshman catcher/first baseman Kayla Wartner was 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Senior Sarah Robinson and freshman Leisha Li‘ili‘i homered in the first game. Iwata, Wartner, Alex Aguirre, Dara Pagaduan, Brynne Buchanan and Kelly Majam went deep in the second game.
UH closes the fall season this Saturday with an exhibition against Hawaii-Hilo at Maui High School.
Gaskell on fire at HIC Pro
Maui surfer Hank Gaskell had two of the top tube rides and posted the highest two-wave heat total with an 18.15 on Saturday in the HIC Pro contest at Sunset Beach.
The contest’s round of 64 is nearly complete.
The eventual HIC Pro winner will be the Association of Surfing Professionals Hawaii regional champion and will earn a berth into the first two events of the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series, which starts Nov. 12.
Ian Gentil and Ian Walsh also turned in impressive heat victories Saturday.
The HIC Pro continues today, surf permitting.
Krout, Malley tops from Hawaii
Lacey Krout and Dany Malley were Hawaii’s top female and male finishers at the NCAA Division II Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Spokane, Wash.
Hawaii Pacific’s Malley placed 16th on the 10-kilometer men’s course in 31 minutes, 41 seconds.
Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Krout finished the 6K women’s course in 36th place in 22:46.
In team competition, the BYUH women and men both placed 12th.
Justin Royer (45th place in 32:47) led the Seasiders men’s team.
Hawaii Pacific improves to 2-0
Mana Hopkins scored 20 points to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 60-41 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in women’s basketball on Saturday in the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
Skye Savini added 12 points for the Sea Warriors (2-0).
UHH knocks off Dominican
Hillary Hurley pounded 19 kills to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-10 win over Dominican in women’s volleyball on Saturday.
Olivia Lane added 16 kills for the Vulcans (14-6, 10-5 Pacific West Conference).
Seliuia Falealili had seven kills for the Penguins (1-22, 1-13).
BYUH drops Chaminade in soccer
Bent Jenson scored two goals and Mark Davis and Kevin Fronk scored one apiece as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 4-1 in men’s soccer in Laie.
Eric Lowe, Aaron Drewery, Jenson and Brett Waters all had assists for the Seasiders (9-7-2, 5-5-2 PacWest).
Chase Kodama scored the goal for Chaminade (0-15-2, 0-11-1).
