Rescue to resume Tuesday of hikers on Waimano Trail

A father and son who got lost while hiking in central Oahu will have to spend tonight on a ridge in the Koolau Range.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said weather conditions were too dangerous for a helicopter to rescue the men, who got lost while hiking the Waimano Trail above Pearl City.

Wind, rain and clouds prevented the rescue by fire helicopter or by fire rescue personnel hiking in the dark, Seelig said.

The two men are uninjured, got lost and ended up on the ridge, where they will have to hunker down for the night, Seelig said.

Fire rescue personnel are trying to locate the men using GPS on their cell phone.

The fire department will reassess conditions at first light tomorrow morning to determine what will be done, Seelig said.
