Lau wins HIC Pro; Gaskell earns wild card

Ezekiel Lau, a 17-year-old Kamehameha senior, captured the $85,000 HIC Pro surf contest on Sunday at Sunset Beach.

Lau earned a convincing win in the final over Maui’s Ian Gentil, Kauai’s Kamalei Alexander and defending HIC Pro champion Billy Kemper of Maui in 4- to 5-foot waves.

Lau won the $12,000 first-place prize money.

Lau made it all the way through the round of 32 on Sunday to take the title.

Gentil took second place and $6,000. Alexander won $4,000 and Kemper took home $3,000.

Maui’s Hank Gaskell, the 2009 HIC Pro champion, lost in the semifinals but still scored sufficient points to win the ASP Hawaii regional champion title. He won $1,000 and earned a wild card into the first two events of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which starts Saturday.

Washburn hands HPU its first loss

Stevi Schultz and Ebonie Williams scored 15 points apiece to lead Washburn University to a 90-45 victory over Hawaii Pacific in the Disney Tip-Off Classic women’s basketball tournament final on Sunday in Anaheim, Calif.

Taiyande Huskey scored 10 points to lead the Sea Warriors (2-1).

Cassie Lombardino had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Blues (3-0), who hail from Topeka, Kan.

UHH defeats Academy of Art in soccer

Kristine Pasek and Brianna Lopiccolo scored goals to give Hawaii-Hilo a 2-1 win over Academy of Art in women’s soccer on Sunday in San Francisco.

Lindsey Poulsen assisted on Pasek’s goal for the Vulcans (5-9-2, 3-7-2 Pacific West Conference).

Erica Wheeler-Dubin scored the goal for the Urban Knights (4-10-2, 2-8-2).
