Man convicted in death of former isle DJ
A Los Angeles jury has convicted a Montana man in the murder of former Hawaii radio personality Stephen B. Williams, whose body was found floating in the ocean off Santa Catalina Island about five years ago.
Prosecutor John McKinney says jurors deliberated for a day and a half before finding 60-year-old Harvey Morrow guilty Wednesday of shooting and killing Williams, also a former Denver disc jockey.
The reported that Williams’ body was found in May 2006 after he told friends he planned to confront Morrow about the inheritance Morrow said he would invest on Williams’ behalf. Authorities found Morrow in Montana. He will be sentenced for murder for financial gain Dec. 16 and faces the possibility of a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Williams’ trademark deep voice and humor made him among Honolulu’s most popular disc jockeys in the 1970s.
Budget cuts erase welfare job programs
Budget cuts are forcing the state to eliminate programs that help welfare recipients get jobs.
Department of Human Services spokeswoman Kayla Rosenfeld said Thursday the state spends $5.4 million on those programs each year. The programs will end Dec. 31.
The cuts affect about 580 people across the state.
The programs, which began in 2001, offer stipends to qualifying families who had finished receiving the maximum five years of welfare benefits. They also provided funds to people who left welfare after receiving benefits for two years.

Boaters rescued off Kauai coast
The Coast Guard helped a sailboat that got into trouble Friday night off the coast of Kauai.
The 47-foot Whistling Oyster hit an object and began taking on water, the Coast Guard said.
The crew of two put out a mayday call that was picked up by a Pride of America cruise ship and relayed to the Coast Guard at about 11:30 p.m.
Using a pump, the sailboat’s crew was able to remove the water as it seeped in.
The Coast Guard sent a vessel from Kauai to escort the sailboat to Oahu. A rescue vessel from Honolulu took over the escort at 8:15 a.m. Saturday and the sailboat arrived safely at Ko Olina at 1:54 p.m., the Coast Guard said.
No injuries were reported.
