The Sheraton Princess Kaiulani is featuring its annual Santa’s German Gingerbread Village through Jan. 2 in the resort’s lobby.
The village was created by executive chef Ralf Bauer and a team that includes the hotel’s pantry chef Amie Tungpalan, executive sous-chef John Hightower and its engineering department. It took them more than 750 hours to design, construct and set up the scene, which comprises quaint mountainside German villages that Bauer recalls from his native country, plus medieval churches, bell towers, train stations, a carousel and a skating rink. For that Hawaii touch, Bauer also includes Kawaiaha‘o Church, ‘Iolani Palace and Aloha Tower.
The gingerbread creation stands more than 14 feet high and 24 feet wide and was constructed with 225 gallons of icing, 140 pounds of dark chocolate, 50 pounds of white chocolate and 70 sheets of gingerbread.
