Death of two monk seals on Molokai under investigation

State and federal officials are investigating the deaths of two endangered Hawaiian monk seals on Molokai’s southern coast.

National Marine Fisheries spokeswoman Wende Goo said the seals died under suspicious circumstances.

Goo said the investigation was continuing and declined to release details about the deaths.

The body of one seal, an 8-year-old adult male, was found in mid-November, and the other, a female less than two years old, was discovered a couple of days ago, authorities said.

Goo asked people who have information about the deaths to call the agency’s office of enforcement, 1-800-853-1964.

Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Upon conviction, a violation of the federal Endangered Species Act is punishable with a fine of up to $50,000 and/or up to one year in prison.
