A 28-year-old man is scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court today in connection with the beating death of a man in Kalihi nearly three years ago.
Vito John Talo, also known as John Vito Talo, was indicted on a second-degree murder charge by a grand jury Dec. 20. Prosecutors said he fatally beat Damaso Domingo, 54, who was found severely injured and unresponsive near the intersection of North School Street and Lanakila Avenue at about 2 a.m. Jan. 13, 2009.
Domingo was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition; he died two days later. Domingo was beaten so severely that his doctor in the intensive care unit, Dr. Shirley Domingo, did not realize the victim was her father until after her brother called to inform her what had happened.
Witnesses said Damaso Domingo was attacked by two men after they had exchanged words with him on the sidewalk.
Police arrested Aitasi B. Legatasia, 19, of Kalihi, about nine months following the incident after receiving a tip on the case. Legatasia pleaded no contest in 2010 to third-degree assault in connection with the case. He was granted a deferral of his plea and is expected to be a witness in the case against Talo.
Talo, who has served time in prison after prior convictions for felony robbery and assault, is being held on $250,000 bail.
