Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that burned the former Kona Bakery building in Kealakekua Sunday night.

About a quarter of the vacant,split-level structure was in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene next to the Antique Shop, south of Hale Ke’e Ke’e Place off Highway 11 at about 6:34 p.m.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:20 p.m. The collapse of the roof onto the first floor and darkness made it difficult to completely extinguish the fire, firefighters said. The fire was reported extinguished at 10:18 p.m.

Police closed part of Highway 11 for several hours as firefighters battled the blaze. Traffic was reduced to one lane and police directed traffic around the fire.

No injuries were reported and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
