About 200 personnel and F-16 fighters from the Vermont Air National Guard are heading to Hawaii to tangle with the Hawaii Air National Guard’s F-22 Raptors.
The airborne engagement practice starting Monday is expected to last about two weeks and is part of the regularly held "Sentry Aloha" exercises, said Hawaii National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Chuck Anthony.
The Vermont Air Guard will act as aggressor aircraft in training typically held north of Oahu. The F-16 provides "dissimilar" air combat training for the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 199th Fighter Squadron.
"Basically, the idea is just to get a different type of aircraft with different capabilities and different strengths and weaknesses to go up against your pilots," Anthony said.
Active-duty pilots out of Hill Air Force Base in Utah flying F-16s are expected to train in Hawaii in late March during another round of exercises, Anthony said.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is home to at least 14 Raptors, the Air Force’s most advanced fighter. A total of 20 will be based here.
