Barack Obama requests $250M for Honolulu’s rail project

President Barack Obama has requested $250 million for the Honolulu rail transit project in the coming fiscal year.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said that’s the largest amount for any rail project in the country. The Obama administration requested $150 million for a San Francisco light rail project.

Inouye says the Federal Transit Administration funds will help complete a project that’s needed for job creation, decreasing dependence on imported oil and offering West Oahu residents an alternative to driving into Honolulu.

He says the support from the federal government for the project is "unprecedented."

Hawaii’s congressional delegation in Washington say they will continue to ensure the project receives its share of federal funding.
