Fatal injuries blamed on fall from truck
A 23-year-old Kaneohe man apparently fled the scene after a man fell out of his 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup Sunday in Kahaluu, police said.
The victim, a 21-year-old Kaneohe man, died of head injuries he sustained after falling out of a moving vehicle, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said. His name has not yet been released.
Police said an anonymous caller reported a man lying on Kamehameha Highway near Wailehua Road at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. The man was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center where he died at 1:29 a.m. Monday. Police opened a failure-to-render-aid case but have not made any arrests.
Police said the older man was driving a gray Nissan Frontier when the accident happened.
Fatal crash victim hailed from Fukuoka
The Japanese honeymooner who died in a motorcycle crash near Crouching Lion Inn on Friday has been identified as Kaori Teramoto, 27, of Fukuoka prefecture.
Teramoto was a passenger on a rented motorcycle driven by her husband when it hit a guardrail on Kamehameha Highway near the inn at about 12:15 p.m. Friday.
Teramoto’s husband was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. His current condition was not available.
As of Tuesday there have been 11 traffic deaths on Oahu’s roads this year, compared with nine at this time a year ago.
Suspect charged in pedestrian mall havoc
A 27-year-old Kalihi man who police believe tried to rob a man at gunpoint and drove away through a crowded Chinatown pedestrian mall Saturday will make his initial appearance Thursday in Honolulu District Court after he was released on $75,000 bail this week.
Ifo Nimoai Jr., 27, was charged with second-degree robbery, firearms violations and promoting a detrimental drug.
Police said Nimoai robbed a 27-year-old man at gunpoint and then drove away recklessly through the Sun Yat Sen Mall beside Nuuanu Stream at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, nearly hitting pedestrians. Signs posted on the mall say no vehicle traffic is allowed, police said.
Nimoai was seen carrying a handgun, police said.
Officers found Nimoai in his vehicle on a public street near the mall and arrested him at 10:51 a.m.
Man who died in custody is identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the Waianae man who died in police custody Monday as Aaron Torres, 37.
Officials were working to determine the cause of his death.
Police responded to a call from a Waianae home at 4:30 a.m. Monday. Police said officers found Torres in an unstable mental state and that he also may have been under the influence of drugs. Police said Torres lost consciousness as officers tried to restrain him to prevent him from harming himself or others. Emergency Medical Services personnel took Torres to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:31 a.m., police said.
Motorcyclist injured in Wahiawa collision
A motorcyclist was taken the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition Tuesday night following a crash in Wahiawa near Schofield Barracks. He was later upgraded to serious.
The man, 35, was a motorcyclist involved in a crash with another motor vehicle on Wilikina Drive near Kamananui Road at about 6:34 p.m., a spokeswoman for the city Department of Emergency Services said.
