Man, 65, arrested in drive-by shooting
A 65-year-old Kakaako man was arrested after a drive-by shooting Friday night on the H-1 freeway in Aiea, police said.
The shooting apparently followed what was described as "a traffic incident on the freeway." The 65-year-old motorist fired a gun at another moving vehicle driven by another man, 23, while in the eastbound lanes of H-1 while the victim was trying to exit at the Aiea cutoff around 9:30 p.m., police said.
Two bullets struck the victim’s vehicle but the man himself was not injured.
The suspect, who was driving a blue Chevy Blazer, fled but was later positively identified and arrested at his Coral Street apartment around 11:35 p.m., police said. He was being held Saturday at the police cellblock pending a charge of second-degree attempted murder.
It is unclear what happened prior to the shooting, police said.
Firefighters rescue ailing hikers from trails
Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel airlifted two injured hikers to safety in separate incidents Saturday at the Koko Head and Maunawili Falls trails.
Shortly after 9 a.m., rescue workers responded to a 23-year-old woman who suffered ankle and wrist injuries after falling on the steep, narrow Koko Head trail in Hawaii Kai. The hiker, who also suffers from asthma, was airlifted off the trail and transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Service personnel around 9:45 a.m.
Just before 2 p.m., rescue workers were called to the Maunawili Falls trail, where a 30-year-old woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a fall. Rescue personnel located the woman and escorted her to a clearing from which she could be airlifted to a nearby park.
She was transferred to EMS care around 4 p.m.
It has been a busy weekend for HFD rescue personnel. On Friday night, HFD workers were called to Manoa Falls to assist a female hiker who suffered a seizure.
