Death of Ewa Beach boy ruled a homicide
A 14-month-old Ewa Beach boy died Monday from blows to his head, and his death has been ruled a homicide, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday.
Police detectives, who classified the case as an unattended death pending the autopsy Tuesday, said the boy was taken from an Ewa Beach care facility Thursday to the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. The boy died at about 5:05 a.m. Monday.
It was not clear when or where the abuse of the boy occurred.
The case has been turned over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service because the incident took place on military property, police detectives said. NCIS personnel could not be reached Tuesday night.
Medical examiners said the cause of death was "complications of cranial cerebral injuries due to abusive head trauma" and that manner of death was homicide.
Man charged in abuse of family member
A 25-year-old Punchbowl man, who already faces two court dates on charges of abusing a family member and violating a restraining order, has been charged with four other violations including unlawful imprisonment of a woman.
Grant Moniz Jr. was arrested Monday after police said he violated a protective order and entered the car of a 23-year-old woman Feb. 22 in Nuuanu. Police said Moniz prevented the woman from calling the police and leaving the car. He was charged Tuesday.
Moniz was charged with violating a protective order, interference with reporting and emergency, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and unlawful imprisonment. His bail was set at $3,000.
Moniz also is scheduled to go on trial March 12 for abuse of a family or household member and May 14 for a temporary restraining order violation.
It is not known whether the same woman is involved in the three incidents.
