About 51,000 gallons of storm water and raw wastewater spilled from the Kaneohe Wastewater Pre-Treatment Facility on Mahalani Circle this morning as the state Health Department issued a brown water advisory for Oahu because of the danger from contamination from storm runoff island-wide.

The state Health Department and city Department of Environmental Services said heavy rains caused two manholes at the facility on Mahalani Circle to overflow, spilling an estimated 300 gallons a minute from both manholes. The spill began at about 5:30 a.m. and was secured at 8:20 a.m. Residents are warned to say out of waters fronting Mahalani Circle to Kaimalu Place.

The city is posting signs along the shoreline and Kaneohe Beach Park and will sample waters after the heavy rains clear.  

The Health Department is warning the public to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff thoughout Oahu. The waters could be contaminated from overflowing cesspools, sewer  manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris caused by heavy rains.

Officials say if coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
