A skillet with cooking oil in it caught fire Wednesday morning and burned Golden Coin Bake Shop and Restaurant in Wahiawa.
The 10:47 a.m. fire caused about $200,000 in damage in the kitchen and front counter area of the restaurant, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. No one was hurt.
When the skillet caught fire, an employee put the pan on the floor and poured water on it, Seelig said.
"That caused oil to splash and ignite an area where food and paper goods are stored," he said.
The best way to put out a stove fire is to cover the pan with a lid, to or to just leave it in place, he said.
Range hoods typically have suppression systems, "and if the fire grows big enough, the suppression system would have extinguished it," Seelig said.
The fire was brought under control at 10:58 a.m. and the extinguished about 11:16 a.m., Seelig said.
