Hawaii football head coach Norm Chow said Cayman Shutter will receive a “significant suspension” in the aftermath of the quarterback’s recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.
Chow was set to meet with UH officials before finalizing the length of the suspension, which might extend well beyond spring training, depending on the outcome of Shutter’s case.
Chow, who returned from a family trip to China on Saturday, will discuss the specifics in a press briefing before today’s afternoon practice.
The Warriors were on hiatus last week because of UH’s spring break. They did not practice on Monday. Spring training runs through April 27.
The suspension is in line with the strict standards Chow has established since being hired as UH’s head coach in December. He cut a scholarship player for missing meetings. Two weeks ago, he would not allow two players to practice after they showed up 30 seconds late for warmups.
Following the last practice before spring break, Chow warned the players about doing anything to “embarrass” the program. Shutter was arrested at 3:30 on Thursday. He was released an hour later after posting $500 bail, according to the police log.
David Graves remains as the No. 1 quarterback. Ikaika Woolsey, who enrolled at UH in January as a grayshirt, is expected to ascend to No. 2. Chow praised Woolsey’s work in the first three spring practices.
Jeremy Higgins, Justin Alo and Taylor Graham are the other UH quarterbacks.
Higgins is a Saint Louis School graduate who redshirted last year after transferring from Utah State.
Alo is a grayshirt who enrolled at UH in January. Graham, who transferred from Ohio State in January, must redshirt this year.
