Willie Quinn might get a good night’s rest now.
The Mid-Pacific coach tossed and turned on Tuesday night, but there was no reason to fret, after all. Keiki Carlos, his ace on the mound, lost her perfect game in the sixth inning, but finished with a one-hitter as No. 2 Mid-Pacific doused Maryknoll 8-0 on Wednesday at Sand Island Park.
Shayna Ige’s bloop infield single in the hole at short with one out in the sixth ended Carlos’ bid for a perfect game. Ige was thrown out on the same play, attempting to stretch it to a double. Carlos faced the minimum 21 batters. Not a single ball hurled by the ace left the infield until Erica Inagaki flew out to shallow center to end the game.
Carlos, a senior who has signed with the University of Hawaii, struck out seven without issuing a walk.
“Pretty much everything was good. The change-ups were good today. I’ve been working on it a lot at practice and it showed up today,” said Carlos, last year’s All-State pitcher of the year.
Quinn was relieved.
“Maryknoll’s a tough team. I couldn’t sleep (Tuesday) night. We chipped away and the last inning, we opened it up,” he said. “Keiki is looking like her old self today. She’s been tired and a little fatigued, but I’m happy to say she returned to form today.”
The Spartans, a talented, but very young squad, were simply overpowered by Carlos.
“Keiki pitched a helluva game, there’s no doubt,” Spartans coach John Uekawa said. “Good pitching always neutralizes good hitting and she kept us off balance. Choked us and we had a lot of ground balls and pop flies.”
Carlos was also on fire at the plate, going 3-for-4, including a two-run single in the seventh. She scored two runs out of the No. 3 spot in the Owls’ order. The first four batters in the lineup — Kacy Aoki, Ali‘itasi Docktor, Carlos and Nicole Lopez — combined to go 9-for-16 with five RBIs and six runs scored.
The Owls improved to 13-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, remaining in a first-place tie with Punahou.
“We play (at) Punahou on Tuesday and hopefully we come out to play that game like today,” Carlos said.
The senior, who got a bit of rest recently after a heavy run of games, was powerful and precise. Nearly three weeks ago, she was fairly hittable in a 4-3 win over Maryknoll.
“We prepared a lot more this time around than last time. They have an awesome pitcher in Shearyna (Labasan),” Carlos said. “She pitches really fast, so we’ve been practicing a lot against fast(ball) pitches. The key is to be relaxed and not be too aggressive. We made contact.”
Labasan, Maryknoll’s freshman phenom, permitted just two runs through five innings. MPI tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, then blew the game open with a five-run seventh frame. The Owls finished with 16 hits, putting a lid on one of the league’s hottest teams.
Maryknoll had won five of six games entering the contest. Labasan finished with six strikeouts and no walks.
Aoki led off the bottom of the first with a single and came home on Lopez’s single to left for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Carlos singled and courtesy runner Kayla Au crossed the plate on a throwing error as the Owls secured some breathing room with a two-run lead.
Mid-Pacific plated an insurance run in the sixth after Jordan Joy singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on Kiley Oeda’s single to center.
With Labasan tiring in the seventh, MPI smacked six hits in a row, including a run-scoring double by Docktor to deep left center, and a two-run single by Carlos.
