Case criticizes Hirono for ducking debates in Democratic Senate race

Hawaii’s two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate will appear jointly at five events before the primary election in August.

U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono released a debate and joint forum schedule Thursday, detailing the events she will appear at with her opponent, former U.S. Rep. Ed Case.

Case issued a press release criticizing the congresswoman for not also agreeing to debates sponsored by the state’s leading television networks and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Hirono’s campaign responded that the events she will appear at include one debate on a neighbor island and another on Hawaii Public Radio. The candidates will also appear in a televised forum on PBS Hawaii.

Hirono’s finance chairwoman Jadine Nielsen says the campaign believes it is providing voters with ample opportunity to consider Hirono and Case’s records.
