Ricketts earns WAC pitcher of the week
University of Hawaii senior Stephanie Ricketts was named the Western Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week on Monday, earning the award for the fifth time this season and the 12th time in her career.
Ricketts earned two wins in UH’s three-game sweep of Fresno State last weekend and threw a no-hitter in her final start at home.
Ricketts (25-3, 1.02 ERA) finished with six strikeouts in UH’s 11-3 win in five innings in last Friday’s series opener. She struck out seven and walked two on Saturday, when she fired her second no-hitter of the season and sixth of her career. She also became UH’s all-time leader in shutouts in the Rainbow Wahine’s 2-0 victory.
Hawaii (40-5, 14-3 WAC) closes the regular season with a road series at Utah State starting Saturday.
UH coed sailors miss out on nationals
The University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished the season with a fifth-place showing at the PCCSC Dinghy Championships, hosted by UC Santa Barbara last weekend.
UC Irvine (61 points) edged Hawaii (63) in the final heat of the day to claim the last of four qualifying spots for the ICSA National Semifinals.
Stanford won the regatta with 22 points, and UC Santa Barbara took second (44), with Long Beach State placing third (55).
UH golfer in ninth place after first round
University of Hawaii men’s golfer Cory Oride stands in ninth place after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference men’s championships at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., on Monday.
Oride, a junior from Lihue, shot an even-par 72. Teammates Nainoa Calip (73), TJ Kua (78), Jared Sawada (81) and David Saka (81) also completed the first round.
Idaho’s Sean McMullen (7-under 65) is the tourney leader.
As a team, Hawaii stands in sixth place after shooting a 304. Idaho and Fresno State share the team lead at 287.
Hawaii-Hilo sweeps Academy of Art
Casey Bohlmann pitched 31⁄3 innings of scoreless relief and earned the win as Hawaii-Hilo defeated Academy of Art 2-1 in 10 innings in the first game of a baseball doubleheader sweep Monday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Jordan Murai and John Abreu each drove in a run for the Vulcans.
UHH routed Academy of Art 11-0 in the second game as Seamus Yoneshige tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the Vulcans.
The Vulcans improved to 14-32 overall and 11-26 in the Pacific West Conference. The Urban Knights dropped to 5-39 and 2-29.
