Man surrenders in car theft that led to killing
Maui police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with an auto theft that resulted in the shooting death of a 31-year-old Wailuku man Tuesday afternoon at a Kihei resort.
The 28-year-old, also of Wailuku, surrendered to police at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Police were holding him at the Wailuku police station on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle while the investigation continues.
An 18-year veteran police officer, who had responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, shot and killed Marshall M.K. Langford after Langford pointed a gun at the officer in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui Hotel, police said.
Police had been searching for a second suspect, who had reportedly left the car and gone into the hotel.
