LAS VEGAS >>  Federal officials are suing a Las Vegas hotel-casino amid claims that the hotel was overzealous in verifying non-citizens’ work documents.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced last week that it filed suit against Tuscany Hotel and Casino LLC, east of the Las Vegas Strip.

The lawsuit claims Tuscany discriminated against non-citizens by asking them to provide more or different documents than is required. The complaint also alleges the company performed unnecessary checks of their working status, and recorded the expiration date of non-citizens’ green cards so it could re-verify employment eligibility.

Thomas Perez of the justice department’s civil rights division says it’s illegal to treat authorized workers differently during the employment eligibility process based on their citizenship status.

A request for comment from Tuscany managers was not immediately returned.
