Honolulu’s Crystal Dzigas won the longboard division of the Roxy Wakiki Classic held at Kuhio Beach on Saturday, defeating world No. 2-ranked longboard surfer Kelia Moniz in the final.
The Waikiki Classic is a free surfing contest for women and attracted more than 200 contestants. It is the third of seven Association of Surfing Professionals Women’s World Longboard Tour qualifiers. The series determines who will compete for the 2012 ASP World Longboard title in China held in November. The waves were in the 1- to 2-foot range.
"I am super stoked to win," Dzigas said. "It’s my home break and I have been surfing here for 15 years, so it feels good. Our final was really slow as far as waves go. It was a 30-minute heat and only four waves broke. Luckily I caught two of them. Both were pretty similar. I stood up, hanged five, then hanged 10; walked back, then I did a cutback.
"I like that it’s an all-girls contest because it puts the focus on us. Usually if it’s a guys event we’re always second, so it’s pretty awesome."
The 19-year-old Moniz was pleased with her second-place performance.
"I am really happy right now," Moniz said. "It was a fun final and it’s always a blast to surf in Waikiki with only three other girls out. It’s a beautiful wave to longboard and I always take advantage of surfing contests out here."
The contest also featured amateur female surfers ranging from 6 years old and up.
