Wildfire forces evacuations in Waianae near site of June fire
Police evacuated several homes near Waianae Valley Road Wednesday after a 100-acre wildfire broke out close to the area where a large wildfire burned last month.
Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire started near a bus turnaround at Haleahi and Waianae Valley roads about 2 p.m.
About 40 Honolulu firefighters responded to the fire with several engines, tankers and a helicopter and had the fire 95 percent contained by 9 p.m., Seelig said.
Federal firefighters were also assisting along with a private helicopter contracted to help, Seelig said.
The fire came as close as 20 to 30 feet to a home in the area, but firefighters were able to stop it before it damaged the home. No other homes were threatened, Seelig said.
The wildfire was burning near where a 1,200-acre fire burned in Waianae and Lualualei valleys over several days in early June, Seelig said.
