Paddleboard world championship Sunday
About 300 of the world’s top prone and stand-up paddleboarders will compete in the 16th annual Molokai-to-Oahu Paddleboard World Championship on Sunday.
The 32-mile open ocean crossing of Kaiwi Channel begins at 7:30 a.m. on Molokai and ends at Maunalua Bay Beach Park in Hawaii Kai.
The favorites in the women’s SUP race will be Andrea Moller, Talia Gangini and Jenny Kalambach.
Moller, born in Brazil but who now lives on Maui, returns to defend her title. She set a course record of 5:26:51.
Heading the male SUP field will be 17-year-old Connor Baxter, a Maui native who set a record (4:26:10) en route to his first title last year.
Dragon Boat races Saturday, Sunday
The 2012 Dragon Boat Festival Races will be held Saturday and Sunday at Ala Moana Beach.
Teams of 16 paddlers, one flag catcher/drummer and one steersman will compete in division races on Saturday and open races on Sunday. Competition goes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
Kalakaua hoops clinic in September
The Kalakaua at Moanalua fall basketball camp will be held Sept. 1-3 at Moanalua gym.
Coaches for the camp will be Dennis Agena of the Kalakaua Clinic and former Punahou girls basketball coach Mike Taylor.
Session 1 will be for those ages 7-11 from 8 a.m. to noon. The second session will be for those 11-17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Proceeds to go the Moanalua High and University of Hawaii Wahine basketball teams. Cost is $100.
