Ma runs away with Army Invitational title
Matt Ma coasted to a five-shot victory Saturday in the Army Invitational golf tournament at Leilehua Golf Course.
Ma, this year’s Manoa Cup champion, closed with a round of even-par 72. His 54-hole total of 4-under 212 was five better than Kauai’s Cory Oride (71) and six ahead of Jared Sawada (69) and Bradley Shigezawa (72). No one else was within 10 shots.
Carl Ho won the senior flight by six strokes, shooting 76 for a 233 total. Rocky Reed (79—243) captured the A flight, Jose Elizaga (78—246) the B flight and Al Amii (83—254) the C flight.
Solar Universe is king of summer league
Solar Universe dominated the overtime period for a 114-102 win over Flipbooks Hawaii for the College Summer League title on Saturday night in Manoa.
A packed crowd in the Manoa Valley District Park gym saw Solar score the first seven points of the extra period.
University of Hawaii junior guard Brandon Spearman led the Artie Wilson-coached Solar team with 43 points, while ex-BYU guard Rashaun Broadus added 33 in the win.
“It felt good, real good,” Spearman said. “We fought hard. I haven’t felt like this since back in high school, my senior year.”
Kaunaoa McGee led Flipbooks Hawaii, the regular-season champion, with 25 points. Chaminade alum Leon Ballard added 24, as did UH junior Christian Standhardinger.
Spearman made a game-saving block on McGee at the regulation buzzer.
Wahine soccer coach to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii women’s soccer coach Michele Nagamine and Punahou rifle coach Karen Finley are the featured speakers Monday at the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s luncheon meeting at the Maple Garden restaurant.
The luncheon ($15) starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program at noon.
