Injured woman sues truck driver, city

A 68-year-old Oahu woman filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Circuit Court against the city and a city garbage truck driver for injuries she suffered after a 58,000-pound city garbage truck ran over her right foot while she was crossing a street.

Paula Harris allegedly had the traffic and the pedestrian walk signal in her favor when she began crossing Vineyard Boulevard April 13 in the crosswalk from Queen Emma Street.

The driver of the garbage truck turned right from Queen Emma Street onto Vineyard, and allegedly failed to yield the right of way to Harris, the lawsuit says.

Harris, a principal of The Harris Co., a real estate consulting firm, is also suing the garbage truck driver, Travis Kamakele.

Harris suffered severe bodily injuries, and had to have her right foot amputated, as well as suffering severe emotional distress, mental anguish, permanent bodily and/or psychological injuries, alleges the complaint filed by her attorneys, Cronin Fried Sekiya Kekina & Fairbanks.

Green waste collection halted at Hanalei site

The Hanalei transfer station is not accepting green waste because of safety concerns due to muddy conditions in the drop-off area, Kauai County announced Tuesday.

Residents may drop off their green waste at the Kapaa transfer station. All services at the Kapaa station — except for green waste — were suspended Tuesday because of an electrical problem, accord- ing to a news release.

Residents may drop off solid waste and recyclables at any other Kauai transfer station or the Kekaha Landfill.

Sign-ups open for Kauai County wellness fair

Kauai County has invited health and wellness organizations to sign up for the county’s sixth annual health and wellness fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Lihue Civic Center.
