Investigators return to $1.4 million vacation condo fire
Maui fire investigators are returning today to the scene of a $1.4 million fire at the Valley Isle Resort, an oceanfront vacation condo complex in Kahana.
The cause of the fire that broke out before 7 a.m. Monday is undetermined.
The fire broke out on the second floor of a building housing a gym, sauna, kitchen and offices, said Fire Chief Lee Mainaga said. Firefighters evacuated tourists from adjacent buildings in the high-rise complex.
Residents were allowed to return at about 3 p.m. through a beach access. Electricity was restored to the units, but elevators were not working.
About 60 firefighters battled the blaze, which was put out at 4:40 p.m., Mainaga said.
Damage was estimated at $900,000 to the structure and $500,000 to the contents.
