Eight people are homeless and their pet dog is dead following an early-morning fire Monday in Kaneohe.

Firefighters said eight people — four women, one man and three boys — were in the Peninsula Place home when the alarm was called in at 4:03 a.m. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene, but they were able to bring the blaze under control by 4:24 a.m., according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Robert Main.

The family escaped without injury.

Damage to the property is estimated at $350,000 for the structure and $40,000 to its contents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
