Cops aim high for fundraiser
Law enforcement officers across the state will be spending three days atop Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in the 11th annual Cop on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics Hawaii this weekend. Additional locations on Oahu are Aikahi Shopping Center, Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center and Koko Marina Center.
Officers on Oahu, Hawaii island and Kauai will climb 14-foot-high scaffolding starting at 6 a.m. Friday and will remain there until 2 p.m. Sunday, hoping to attract the attention — and dollars — of passing shoppers. Maui officers held their fundraiser Sept. 14-16.
Since the Cop on Top event began, law enforcement officials have raised more than $1.6 million for Special Olympics Hawaii, which provides free year-round sports training opportunities to more than 2,700 athletes. The agency said the average cost to provide one athlete with training and competition costs about $1,044 a year.
