The Outdoor Circle is celebrating its centennial in part with a tasty fundraiser in partnership with California Pizza Kitchen.
The "Eat Pizza … Save Trees" fundraiser is one day only, Tuesday, and is being offered at the Kahala Mall and Kailua CPK restaurant locations.
The way it works is, customers take in a flier, present it to their servers, and The Outdoor Circle will receive 20 percent of the total check amount, beverages included, on dine-in or takeout orders at both locations.
"This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this," said Bob Loy, director of programs for The Outdoor Circle.
The organization’s funding normally comes through memberships and supporters’ donations.
"When you’ve been around 100 years, you have quite a legacy of members," he said. The Outdoor Circle has outlived many lifelong members whose estates continue to give through bequests, planned giving and the like.
"We’re strictly a grass-roots group," he said, "so we’re reaching out to where the grass roots are eating," Loy chuckled, acknowledging the pun.
Many restaurants offer discounts or other promotions via electronic coupons that can be displayed on smartphones or tablets, without having to print a physical piece of paper. In this case, though, the printed fliers are needed for tallying of the donation amount, Loy said. Fliers collected with customer checks will be sent by the Kahala and Kailua locations to a corporate office for tallying and ultimate donation-check-writing.
Beyond raising funds, Loy hopes to achieve "maybe a bit of outreach to help perpetuate this uniquely Hawaii organization."
When the organization was founded in 1912, "Honolulu looked a lot different then," Loy said, "and thanks to the dedication of those women who founded The Outdoor Circle, we have a city that is filled with trees and absent of billboards."

The inaugural "Film and Food: Pop-Up in the Park" will debut at 5 p.m. Oct. 13 in Mother Waldron Park at Halekauwila and Cooke streets.
The free-admission event, staged by Kamehameha Schools and the Hawaii International Film Festival, will feature the screening of "Spirited Away," by Hayao Miyazaki, projected on a 40-foot screen.
Fans of anime are encouraged to get their Miyazaki-themed cosplay on (dressing up like anime or manga characters), as there will be a costume contest.
The event also will include music, a wishing tree, a giant dragon for photo ops and food vendors.
Attendees, costumed or not, are encouraged to bring their own blankets, beach mats or other seating.
A park cleanup is planned for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday to pretty up the park for the following weekend’s festivities.
