The Honolulu medical examiner has identified the man who drowned near Spitting Caves on Saturday as 27-year-old Daniel Lowe of California.

Lowe was swimming near the caves off Portlock Saturday afternoon but was reportedly unable to climb out of the water and back onto the steep cliff nearby.

Ocean Safety personnel were notified and later found Lowe unresponsive about 30 yards offshore. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
