UH hoops tickets on sale Monday
Season tickets for the 2012-13 University of Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin Monday.
Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center box office, by calling 944-2697 or online at hawaiiathletics.com. The box office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Rego takes 1-shot lead at Turtle Bay
Todd Rego of Waipahu carded a 3-under-par 69 in Saturday’s first round of the Turtle Bay Amateur golf tournament, taking a one-shot lead over Haleiwa’s Isaac Jaffurs going into today’s final round.
Defending champion Kalena Preus was five shots back in sixth place after the first round on the Arnold Palmer Course.
Florence and Payne move on in Portugal
Hawaii’s John John Florence won his first-round heat at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal surf contest on Saturday.
Florence scored 14.73 points for his two waves out of a possible 20 to get past Kai Otton and Patrick Gudauskas and into the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest.
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne also made it to the third round, but he did it the hard way.
After placing third in his first-round heat, Payne beat Jordy Smith 12.80 to 10.77 in the second round.
The contest continues today, surf permitting.
Sea Warriors edge Point Loma in 5
Amanda Moriarty had 13 kills and Elizabeth Culpepper added 12 to help Hawaii Pacific outlast Point Loma Nazarene in five sets Saturday in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match at St. Andrew’s Priory.
Moriarty also had a team-high 25 digs and three aces for the Sea Warriors, who rallied to win 25-19, 23-25, 12-25, 25-22, 15-13. HPU (8-7, 2-5) outblocked the Sea Lions 15.5 to 6.0, getting nine blocks from Haley Doerfler and six from Culpepper.
Kelli LeClair posted 20 kills and 21 digs for Point Loma (7-11, 3-6).
» In a Friday match, Jackie Landers had 24 kills to lead Azusa Pacific to a 25-17, 25-16, 26-28, 25-20 win over Hawaii Pacific at St. Andrew’s Priory. Kasey Thompson had 11 kills and Elizabeth Culpepper 10 for HPU.
No. 10 BYUH sweeps Cal Baptist
Division II No. 10 Brigham Young-Hawaii swept Cal Baptist 25-12, 25-11, 25-14 on Saturday night in Laie in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match to maintain a share of the league lead with Fresno Pacific.
The win also knocked the Lancers out of a first-place tie.
Lauren Hagemeyer led the way for the Seasiders (13-2, 8-0) with 13 kills and a .632 hitting percentage.
Cal Baptist dropped to 15-3 and 8-1.
» In a Friday match, BYUH hit .490 in a sweep of Point Loma Nazarene 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 in Laie.
Hagemeyer had 16 kills and hit .636 for BYUH, and Michelle Chen had 38 assists, four kills and nine digs.
Azusa Pacific drops Chaminade
Azusa Pacific defeated Chaminade 25-18, 25-9, 23-25, 25-19 in women’s volleyball Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Brenda Walker had 22 digs for the Silverswords (6-13, 3-8 (PacWest).
The Cougars improved to 12-7 and 4-5.
» In a Friday match, Ingrid Carmona had 10 kills as Cal Baptist beat Chaminade 25-20, 25-18, 25-13 at McCabe Gym.
Babkina, Deavila win UH-Hilo Invitational
Hawaii Pacific runners claimed three of the top four places to win the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational cross country meet on Saturday at Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf Course.
The Sea Warriors’ Polina Babkina won the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 12 seconds. Chaminade’s Emily Ochsner (18:32) was second, followed by HPU’s Kim Kuhnert (19:26) and Shannon White (19:29). HPU finished with 24 points, followed by Brigham Young-Hawaii (44), Chaminade (80) and UH-Hilo (84).
In the men’s race, Spencer Deavila of Brigham Young-Hawaii edged Chaminade’s Jorge Cisneros by less than a second, both finishing in 15:48. The Seasiders won the team competition with 23 points, followed by the Sea Warriors (49) and the Silverswords (63).
Chaminade men defeat Point Loma
Jose Furman broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 72nd minute, and the Chaminade men’s soccer team defeated Point Loma Nazarene in a Pacific West Conference match Saturday in San Diego.
Goalkeeper Conor Knox had six saves in posting a shutout for the Silverswords (2-7-1, 2-5-1). The Sea Lions fell to 2-9-0 overall, 1-8-0 in conference play.
» Twyla Hamasaki scored in the 82nd minute as the Chaminade women avoided a shutout, losing 6-1 to Point Loma on Saturday in San Diego. The Sea Lions (9-2-1, 7-1-1) outshot the Silverswords (0-10-0, 0-8-0) 21-5, getting 13 shots on goal to Chaminade’s three.
