Waianae water main break closes schools, leaves 400 customers dry

A 16-inch water main break on Farrington Highway near the Waianae Fire Station has left 400 businesses and homes without water.

The Department of Education reported that there will be no classes at Waianae Intermediate School and Kamehameha Puu Kahea Preschool at 86-179 Ala Hema St. because of the water shortage.

The break occurred 85-654 Farrington Highway at 4 a.m.

The Board of Water Supply said it will attempt a water bypass, which could restore water service to most of the affected customers.

One Makaha-bound lane on Farrington Highway was closed between Ala Hema Street and Kaulawaha Road. Traffic patterns may be altered when crews begin excavation to repair the main.
