Region honor for HPU’s Porras
Hawaii Pacific junior forward Alejandro Porras was named to the NCAA All-West Region second team Monday, the only Sea Warrior to be honored.
The Spanish national finished in the top five of the conference in goals (11), assists (11), points (33) and shots (81).
VOLLEYBALL
TV show highlights BYUH
Tonight’s edition of “PacWest Magazine, The Television Show” will feature women’s volleyball conference champion Brigham Young-Hawaii and the Seasiders’ match with the University of Hawaii on Nov. 8.
The show is at 7 p.m. on OC 16. It is also available online at oc16.tv and will be available on PacWest TV on YouTube after tonight’s showing.
This week’s episode also takes a look at PacWest’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which met recently at the conference headquarters in Newport Beach, Calif.
The show repeats at various times through the week on OC 16.
The Seasiders (21-3, 16-0), ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, will host the West Region on Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at Cannon Activities Center. BYUH went undefeated in PacWest play.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Maryville downs UH-Hilo
Maryville (Mo.) University downed Hawaii-Hilo 78-70 in the opening round of the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday in Hilo.
Kiel Myers led the Vulcans, who fell to 1-1 on the season, with 17 points and C.J. Brown added 14.
Gerald Shaw had 18 points and Asa Toney added 17 for the Saints (2-0).
WOMEN’S HONOR ROLL
Ieva Nagy, HPU: The junior forward averaged 14.7 points and 4.7 rebounds as the Sea Warriors opened the season 2-1. She led the league in 3-pointers with 10 in three games.
Mikela Thoemmes, HPU: The junior forward out of Roosevelt averaged 11.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week.
Susannah Walmsey, HPU: The junior guard averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists in three games. She also hit six of 18 3-point attempts.
