Visitor is critically injured in mo-ped crash
A woman in her 50s was taken to the hospital in critical condition just before noon Tuesday after the mo-ped she was driving collided with a car in the Diamond Head area.
The accident occurred at 12:18 p.m. in the 3500 block of Diamond Head Road near the Diamond Head Lookout, police said.
The woman, a visitor from Vista, Calif., lost control and crashed into oncoming traffic, police said.
Driver released after arrest in traffic death
Hawaii County police released a 33-year-old Keaau man held in a traffic death Sunday in Puna.
Police said the driver was reversing a 2000 Ford Explorer in a private driveway when Beke Robert Jr., 29, either fell or jumped out. He was run over.
The incident took place at the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, having no no-fault insurance and no driver’s license, and inattention to driving.
After conferring with prosecutors, police released the man Tuesday pending further investigation.
DUI arrests increase 2.4% on Hawaii isle
The number of drunken driving arrests on Hawaii island is up 2.4 percent, county police reported Tuesday.
There have been 1,426 DUI arrests so far this year, compared with 1,392 during the same period last year, police said.
There have been 1,382 major accidents so far this year in Hawaii County, compared with 1,339 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.2 percent, police reported.
In the week ending Sunday, police arrested 32 motorists for drunken driving. Nine were involved in crashes. One was under 21.
