Pedestrian fatality was Kaneohe man, 81
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified an 81-year-old man killed Saturday while crossing Kaneohe Bay Drive as George Obata of Kaneohe.
A 39-year-old man driving a Toyota Echo struck Obata at about 6:45 a.m., police said. Obata was apparently crossing the road to buy papayas at a home.
Paramedics took Obata in extremely critical condition to the Castle Medical Center, where he died. Police said neither speed nor alcohol is believed to be a factor.
Obata is the second pedestrian death this year and this weekend. A 60-year-old homeless man was struck and killed by a pickup truck before sunrise Friday morning while crossing the street near the Kahe power plant.
