Winds weaken as chances of showers rise
Winds are expected to decrease this weekend as an east-moving trough continues to move across the state.
While heavy rain anticipated for Hawaii island and Maui did not materialize Friday, clouds and showers may still occur in the interior and leeward sections of the islands Saturday and Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Shower activity is expected to increase early next week as a weakening front approaches the state.
A high-surf advisory remains in effect for east-facing shores of Oahu, Hawaii island, Kauai, Maui and Molokai through 6 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service predicts waves of 7 to 10 feet.
Hilo suspect in attack on police goes to court
A 31-year-old Hilo man accused of shooting two Hawaii County police officers earlier this month was released from the hospital Friday and appeared in court.
Keaka D. Martin was charged Jan. 4 with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree reckless endangering and various weapons charges.
Martin was returned to the Hilo police cellblock.
Martin shot himself in the chest at a home on East Palai Street in Hilo before authorities arrested him Jan. 3.
He allegedly shot two officers Jan. 2, who were checking parked vehicles in the 800 block of Kilauea Avenue.
Hearing delayed for 2 accused of escaping jail
Defense lawyers for two men accused of escaping from a Hilo jail have been granted a delay.
West Hawaii Today reports that preliminary hearings for Jarvis Naoki Higa, 35, and Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar, 31, are now scheduled for Feb. 11.
The two men are accused of assaulting a guard, stealing a car and escaping from Hawaii Community Correctional Center on Dec. 5. One of the men was apprehended two days later; the other, more than a week later.
They were moved to Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu.
