Kaneohe’s Dean Wilson birdied his final hole of the weekend to close a productive month at home.
Wilson’s 13-foot putt at Waialae Country Club’s ninth hole on Sunday capped a round of 1-over-par 71, and the Castle High graduate ended his 11th appearance in the Sony Open in Hawaii with a four-round total of 3-under 277.
"It’s special to be here, play on the weekend, play in front of the crowd, have my parents come out and watch," Wilson said. "I think (his mother, Grace) enjoys it more than anyone."
Wilson returned to Hawaii in December and won the Hawaii State Open on Hawaii island. He was given a sponsor’s exemption to the Sony Open and provided one of the tournament’s signature moments with an eagle from the fairway on No. 9 on Friday to make the cut. Wilson finished the weekend tied for 59th and made $12,096.
"I had a great month," Wilson said. "Winning (the state open) and just being home with the family and enjoying the good weather. It’s freezing up in Las Vegas. It’s fun just being part of this tournament.
"I know how much this tournament means to the state of Hawaii and it’s good to be a part of it and see all the fellow players I know on tour really enjoy the course. I just hope to see this tournament continue to flourish and grow."
Wilson will head back to Las Vegas and plot out his next move as he tries to get into events on the PGA and Web.com tours.
"We’ll just see, play it by ear," Wilson said.
