Alex Masaquel scored eight of her 15 points in the third quarter as ‘Iolani broke a 34-all tie and went on to a 69-58 win over Kaimuki on Tuesday in the Division I opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.
Masaquel hauled in 13 rebounds and blocked two shots, and Sheyla Pua Kahalehoe finished with 15 points for ‘Iolani (14-6). Jade Botelho chipped in 10 points, six boards and three swats, and Abrianna Johnson-Edwards added eight points on drives to the bucket. The Raiders were 23-for-34 from the foul line and committed just 14 turnovers while harassing the Bulldogs into 24 giveaways.
"In any state tournament, you’ve got to find a way to move on," Raiders coach Eddie Maruyama said. "Kaimuki did a good job. They’re small, but tough."
Down 17 in the fourth quarter, coach Mona Fa‘asoa’s Bulldogs chipped away while ‘Iolani kept its reserve unit on the floor. Kaimuki started sending ‘Iolani to the foul line midway through the fourth and the ploy was effective. The Raiders missed 11 foul shots in the quarter.
A trey by Ally Pologa cut the margin to 63-52 with 1:35 to go, and after Canny Aikau hit a trey, the Bulldogs were within 66-58 with 31 seconds left.
Kaimuki got a steal on the ensuing play, but Princess Lauvao missed a tough layup and the Raiders put the game on ice with three free throws in the final 21 seconds.
"If we’re going forward with four games in four nights, with school in the morning and a 5 p.m. game (today), we wanted to keep our rebounders fresh," ‘Iolani assistant coach Rodney Veary said. "We were hoping our second group could hold down the fort. We put our confidence and trust in our girls, and they solved the problem."
Lauvao, playing with a chipped bone in her foot since midseason, led Kaimuki with 31 points and 14 rebounds.
"Princess is a very tough matchup," Maruyama said.
Pologa added 12 points, and Aikau tallied eight points and five assists for Kaimuki, the OIA’s third-place team. ‘Iolani kept a lid on Pologa, the sharpshooter, and she took only six 3-point shots, making two.
A crowd of about 400 watched at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium.
The Raiders used their usual platoon system and a full-court press to gradually wear down the Bulldogs. Kaimuki got a huge performance from Lauvao, who had to work extra hard against ‘Iolani’s physical man-to-man defense, dealing with a lot of help-side defenders. She shot 14-for-17 at the foul line and was 8-for-14 from the field.
Masaquel’s hustle under the offensive glass sparked the Raiders just as Kaimuki was gaining momentum. The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to tie it at 34.
But moments after swishing a 3-point shot, Lauvao took a charge from Sierra Buscher and was injured. The senior returned to the game less than a minute later, but the Bulldogs never recovered.
With center Julia Soares sitting much of the game with foul trouble and guard Nikki Vongprachanh out (ankle), Kaimuki began to wilt. Masaquel hit three follow shots in a row as ‘Iolani scored 10 straight points.
Lauvao drove for a three-point play, but the Raiders were too fresh. After Kahalehoe drove for a three-point play and Buscher sank a 3-pointer from the left wing, the Raiders had a 55-38 lead with a little more than six minutes to go.
‘Iolani was outrebounded 34-28 by the smaller Bulldogs and shot 37 percent from the field (21-for-57) against Kaimuki’s matchup zone. They shot just 4-for-17 from the 3-point arc, but hustled for 12 offensive boards.
