Woman hit by garbage truck is identified
The woman who died after she was struck by a city garbage truck Friday has been identified as Pauline Ando, 83, of Aiea.
Ando was believed to have been crossing the road at Kupuwao and Kupukupu streets in the Newtown Estates area of Aiea at 8:53 a.m. when she was hit by the truck that was reversing after picking up a trash bin, police said.
She was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in extremely critical condition. She died at the hospital.
Oregon man dies in Kauai car-truck crash
A 76-year-old Portland, Ore., man was fatally injured in Kapaa shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday when the car in which he was riding was struck by a truck, Kauai police said in a news release.
The man was a passenger in a PT Cruiser on the northbound shoulder of Kuhio Highway. The Cruiser’s driver, a 71-year-old woman, was trying move the car into the northbound lane when a Ford truck heading north hit the driver’s side of the car.
The driver and passenger were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The passenger was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the truck, 62, was uninjured.
Kuhio Highway was closed for more than two hours and traffic was routed to Kawaihau and Mailihuna roads while police investigated the accident. Kuhio Highway was reopened just before 5 p.m.
The traffic fatality was Kauai’s first this year.
Kalihi man arrested in cab driver’s beating
A 27-year-old Kalihi man was arrested Wednesday morning as a suspect in the beating and robbery of a taxi driver at a Tantalus lookout Jan. 30.
Police said the cab driver, 56, reported that he drove a man and woman from Waikiki to the scenic lookout about 8:30 a.m. When all three were outside the cab, the taxi driver was assaulted and the couple took off on foot with his cellphone, police said.
The driver spotted the suspect in Waikiki at 2:28 a.m. Wednesday. Police arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
Husband, 30, charged in assault of wife
Prosecutors charged a Makaha man with various offenses Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and threatening his wife with a knife at a Super Bowl party Sunday.
Christopher K. Enos, 30, was charged with kidnapping, which is a felony, and two counts of abuse of a family or household member.
Police said Enos and his wife, also 30, argued at the party Sunday evening.
He assaulted her and forced her into her vehicle, police said, then drove her to an unknown location and threatened her with a knife.
Enos was arrested at 7:55 a.m. Monday. His bail was set at $80,000.

Fisherman’s body recovered
Hawaii County search and rescue crews Wednesday recovered the body of a fisherman who fell into the water Tuesday night in Keeau.
Coast Guard officials identified the fisherman as Charles Lyon of Hilo.
Lyon was reportedly walking along a bluff about 20 feet above the water when he fell into the ocean, the Coast Guard reported.
Family members called firefighters after the fisherman fell into the water in Hawaiian Paradise Park at 6:30 p.m. and struck his head on the rocks. Authorities were told the man was floating face down.
Man with knife robs campers
Hawaii County police are investigating a reported knife-point robbery at a Hilo park early Wednesday.
At 4:54 a.m., police received a report that a 29-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were camping at Kolekole Beach Park when they were awakened by a male robber who entered their tent and threatened them with a knife before taking several of their possessions. The robber also demanded the keys to a rental vehicle parked nearby. The suspect drove away in the white 2012 Ford Mustang coupe, which was found abandoned in the upper Wainaku area.
The suspect was described as being in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 150-160 pounds, clean shaven and having a fair complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored jacket or hoodie and possibly khaki-colored pants.
