Wahiawa fire does $250,000 in damage
Fire investigators say a blaze that engulfed a single-family home in Wahiawa on Sunday morning caused an estimated $250,000 in damage, Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig said.
The cause of the 9:46 a.m. fire on Koele Way has not been determined, Seelig said Monday.
Two men, a father and son, were not home at the time of the fire.
Witnesses said medical oxygen tanks stored in the home exploded, heaving tanks and debris as far as several hundred feet down the street. Neighbors reported hearing as many as a dozen explosions. No one was injured.
Hilo man charged in robbery at beach park
Hawaii County authorities have charged an 18-year-old Hilo man who allegedly robbed a man and woman who were camping at Kolekole Beach Park on Wednesday.
Tyler Taylor of Hilo was charged Friday night with first-degree robbery, third-degree criminal property damage, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of first-degree unlawful imprisonment, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and two counts of second-degree theft. Bail was set at $121,000.
Police said that at 4:54 a.m. Wednesday a man and woman, both 29, were camping at Kolekole Beach Park when they awoke to a man who entered their tent, threatened them with a knife, took several of their possessions and demanded the keys to their rental car.
Police said the man fled in the couple’s rented white Ford Mustang coupe. Police recovered the abandoned car in Wainaku. The campers went to a nearby home to call police.
